Share your solar cooking experiences......

If you would like to share any of your experiences, experiments, successes, or failures, I would love to post them here, including photos or videos! Just email me at skyline.sunovens@gmail.com!

Today's Wild Game experience!

Hunting season is again at hand. We have a neighbor whose family registers for any and all hunts. They always harvest more than they can consume (we've been well stocked with winter meat for a few years now). Today I cooked an antelope roast!...a bit of fresh onion, garlic, and oregano. After 3 ½ hours it was perfectly tender and moist. Some of that antelope will make awesome jerky. Stay tuned.

Hunter's alert.........

Hunters ought to take a SunOven along for their expedition's base camp! How about fresh hot bread, or warm cookies....perhaps your favorite cake? It can also double as a cooler when packing for the trip.

Really yummy....Nick's Rosemary Bread....

Last week we participated in a farewell picnic for friends who have begun a really exciting adventure (two families moved to Costa Rica). That's a whole novel of its own!

Nick decided to bring his delicious rosemary bread. I altered his plan just slightly....we baked two loaves in our SunOven, at the the park! It went pretty good. We set up the SunOven at around 4:30, put the bread in at 5:00pm, and served it as fresh as bread can be at 5:45!

Tuesday's Adventure......

We' ve actually followed this process for a whole week (in spite of some weather challenges). I didn't post yesterday. However, we did successfully cook 15 fresh eggs...kind of like boiling without the water. Nick also did another batch of his wonderful rosemary bread. We also cooked some chicken thighs for dinner. The chicken required a couple minutes to finish inside due to a sudden change in weather. I'll report our experience in cooking chicken and rice later today.

OK, sometimes nature fights with you a bit. We got  the oven set up. The winds kicked in at 35 to 55 mph, dragging the clouds in. So, I finished cooking the rice on the stove inside. We were preparing the dish not only for our dinner, but for another household as well. As we were beginning to prepare the final dish, which required baking, the high winds put down the local power grid....not too helpful with an electric range!

Let's see....no sun, no electricity. We also own a Camp Chef gas cook stove with NO OVEN. We were able to fashion an oven from the BBQ box by removing the grill plates.  Hey, one needs to prepare for any situation!

Beef Ribs & Baked Potatoes

Today was a SUNNY DAY! After three days of welcome rain, we enjoyed a very sunny day. We prepared a pot of boneless short ribs this afternoon. After two hours, we took them out and put in several whole potatoes. These baked for a little over an hour. I had put the ribs into the (indoor) oven at 150, simply to keep them warm while the spuds cooked. Everyone enjoyed an excellent meal.

OOPS! Rainy days without the sunshine.....

OK, SunOvens don't cook without the sun. Such has been the case Friday and today! So, we'll try Sunday to bake some fresh eggs and, perhaps more cookies.

June 10th, 2010

Moving right along, our experience today was chocolate cake! Michael (16) made one of his favorite scratch recipes (no box mixes for him). Today was a good day for sun cooking. The oven quickly heated to 400. We set the stove timer in the house for 35 min. One suggestion would be to encourage the kids to not play with the dog near the oven. Sophie happened to bump the oven. Take note of the cavity in the cake. However, the result was a very moist and delicious cake!

A new beginning...........

It is our intent to begin using our Global Sun Oven to cook something every sunny day. So far, we've successfully prepared corn-on-the-cob, rosemary bread (our 13 year old), oatmeal cookies (our nine year old), 12# turkey, pork ribs, beef roast, and pork roasts. From now on, we'll  try to include photos as we progress through this fun activity.
